OONI Probe 6.2.0

Is your access to websites and social media apps restricted? Is your network exhibiting abnormal slowness? Consider utilizing OONI Probe to assess your connectivity environment.

This application provides a comprehensive toolset for investigating potential website and messaging app censorship, measuring network speed and performance, and identifying systems that may facilitate censorship or surveillance within your network infrastructure.

Developed by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), a project affiliated with The Tor Project, OONI Probe is designed to detect and analyze internet interference worldwide. Since its inception in 2012, the OONI community has amassed millions of network measurements across over 200 countries, contributing valuable data on instances of network interference.

Evidence Collection of Internet Censorship

• The tool enables users to verify whether specific websites or messaging applications are blocked, potentially providing concrete evidence of censorship activities.

Detection of Censorship and Surveillance Systems

• OONI Probe tests are crafted to identify the presence of intermediary systems (middleboxes) that may orchestrate censorship or facilitate surveillance efforts.

Network Speed and Performance Evaluation

• Users can assess their network's speed and reliability through OONI’s implementation of the Network Diagnostic Test (NDT). Additionally, it offers testing for video streaming performance using Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH).

Availability of Open Data

• OONI actively publishes its network measurement data, supporting transparency and enabling third-party verification, independent research, and broader analysis of global internet censorship. The data can be accessed and downloaded at https://ooni.io/data/.

Open Source Software

• All functionalities within OONI Probe, including NDT and DASH tests, are based on open source software. The source code repositories are available on GitHub: https://github.com/ooni. For a detailed understanding of how the tests operate, additional information can be found at https://ooni.io/nettest/.
